Why was she called the Witch?

She assumed the name of the witch from birth, because her mother was known for being a witch herself. Indeed, it was easier to call her so because no one truly knew what her name was. Instead of Witch, people would call her nastier names, as it seemed they were one and the same. When the Witch’s husband died she went from being called the Witch to also being called ‘the Devil’ because society believed she had poisoned her husband.

What arguments are there for the Witch being a good person?

Despite the many accusations the Witch faced, many people still came to her for help. Though lots came for dubious means, such as getting revenge, this is still a form of help as it helped partners uncover unfaithful spouses and therefore in a warped way, the Witch was helping young women with their marital issues. Moreover, the Witch helped with abortions of young women, who had no other choice if they did not want to keep the baby. Indeed, the Witch helped them to assume control over their own bodies instead of letting the male-dictated laws govern their freedom to choice.
