Hold Back the Stars Irony

Hold Back the Stars Irony

The paradox of Max’s grandparents

Max’s grandparents are among the representatives who helped in formulating the marriage rules. Paradoxically, these grandparents did not think that their grandchild would be among the first victims of such laws. Now Max is in a sexual relationship with Carys before the age of 30. Therefore, Max risks rejection from family members if their relationship must continue.

The irony utopian rules

The utopian rules governing sexual relationships and marriage are satirical. For instance, people are allowed only to get married after attaining the age of thirty. This rule puts Carys and max in a difficult situation. The reader expects lovers to be given an opportunity to express their romance at any age above eighteen years old. The tough rules on marriage are in the Grand Central Hall by the representatives.

The satire of romance and marriage

Romance is portrayed as sacred and it is governed by laid down rules according to societal expectations. Despite their young age, Max and Carys find themselves in a fixed state after realizing that they are in love at a tender age. Since Carys and Max are against societal expectations, they are sent into space exploration on a difficult task to prove their love to the world. Carys and Max are expected to return to earth alive.

The irony of the futuristic world

The author depicts the futuristic world as high tech characterized by electric cars and advanced technology. According to the author, Europia and Britain are rotated once after every three years to promote cultural appreciation and comprehension. The people in these planets are encouraged to travel widely and learn different languages and cultures to promote cohesion. The satire is that people in the futuristic world easily forgets the utopian nuclear war. Therefore, the rotation discourages the recurrence of wars.
