Quotes

“The nicest thing about feeling happy is that you think you'll never be unhappy again.”

The narrator

Carlos got involved with a large number of women in his community and the idea transmitted is that those women were all happy with how things were going for them. While Carlos was alive, those women wanted nothing more than spend as much time as possible with him. As the quote from above suggests it, those women never thought about the possibility that one day, the man they love will disappear from their life forever. This refusal to believe that their happiness could possibly end is what makes Carlos’s death so much difficult for them.

“But if men acted like women there wouldn't be any more torturers.”

The narrator

Carlos is criticized because he was a sensitive man who was not afraid to express his feelings. Other men around him were afraid to act in the same way and felt insecure every time they expressed their feelings. These men saw Carlos as a threat to their way of life. The narrator however claims that when someone expresses their feelings is not a sign of weakness but rather of extreme straight.

“there are reasons of the heart that reason doesn't encompass.”

The narrator

Many actions attributed to some characters can be seen as irrational and extremely hard to understand. The other characters are puzzled and shocked when someone does something which is not generally accepted. Most of these actions are criticized by the rest of the characters who struggle to understand their reason. However, as the narrator points out, actions that are caused by feelings do not have a reason behind them and as such, one should not try to understand them.
