Happy Place Summary

Happy Place Summary

Harriet and Wyn, the novel's main characters, have been friends since college. Together, they experienced the ups and downs of life. While they started as friends, their relationship took a romantic turn, and they became engaged. Their relationship went well for quite some time; however, five months before the start of the novel, they ended their engagement.

Nevertheless, they didn't tell anyone about their breakup, hoping not to spoil their annual vacation with friends, all of whom loved their relationship.

Every year, Harriet, Wyn, and their friends head to a rustic cottage in Maine. For the former couple, the cottage holds a special place in their hearts. It was there that their romance blossomed. It was there that they realized they were meant for each year. However, with the recent change in their relationship status, they don't know how their trip will be affected; they nevertheless continue as if nothing has happened between them so they don't ruin the trip for their friends.

Complications arise when Ford, Harriet's ex and a well-known and successful actor, arrives unexpectedly at the cottage in hopes of rekindling his romance with Harriet. Initially, it appears he is successful as Harriet's past feelings are reignited. On the other hand, Wyn, who witnesses a burgeoning romance, becomes worried that Ford and Harriet might reconnect.

As their trip progresses, Harriet and Wyn begin to argue more and more about trivial matters. After imbibing with copious amounts of alcohol, the two have a heated argument. They say nasty things they don't mean and wake up the next morning with a hangover and a mutual understanding that they need to have a serious conversation about their relationship. They quickly have that conversation, which becomes frank and uncomfortable. They acknowledge their still-present feelings for each other but agree to make substantial changes so that their relationship can endure.

In the end, they decide to get back together and rekindle their romance, recognizing that they will both have challenges to navigate together if they want to make it work. Still, they are committed to working through their issues.
