About the Author

Jared Diamond's varied academic and life experiences, beginning during his youth, contributed to an interdisciplinary foundation in linguistics, laboratory science, ecology and evolutionary biology, history, and geography. Diamond holds a Ph.D. in physiology, and he spent the first half of his career primarily researching the gall bladder. A trip to New Guinea in 1964 to study birds sparked a career shift away from laboratory research and toward people, history, and writing.
