The first line of “The Ugly”, “I Love you as I love the hatchet fish”, affirms that the speaker in “The Ugly” is in love. The love that the speaker feels cannot be summed up by one symbol.
The Flying Man
The ‘flying man’ in “Landscape with Flying Man” is endowed with wings. However, the ‘flying man’ does not take advantage of the wings to fly from the earth. Instead, the flying man’s adoration for the earth pulls him back to the earth.
The fisher lad (“Grain”)
Arguably, the fisher lad is dealing with the penalties of his life as a fisherman. Prior to the karmic strike, the fisher lad was in charge as he used to dominate the fishing hooks and debone the fish. Ironically, the nets that he used to command are now admonishing and trawling him.
