The Fisherman

Nyamgodho is a fisherman who lives in the fishing city of Kisumu. His wife whose name is Achunga married him after he had paid the required twelve head of cattle for bride price. For a while now, Nyamgodho has not had any luck in fishing. Everyday he goes out fishing and says a prayer that he may at least catch some fish to feed his wife. Despite all this, he does not catch any fish. The other fishermen however, catch fish. His wife gets very desperate and insults him for she believes that he does not work as hard as the other fishermen.

One day as he is fishing, he catches an old woman in his fishing basket. The old woman demands that he take her to his house for she wanted to spend the night there. Nyamgodho agrees and as a result, the old woman who is a medicine woman rewards him with a large flock of cattle. The cattle make Nyamgodho instantly rich and famous. As a result, he becomes famous in his community. He also becomes very rude and self absorbed.

One night, Nyamgodho comes home drunk and insults the old woman. The woman whose name is Wagai gets angry at him and leaves his homestead with all the cattle that she had brought. She goes into the lake where she had come from and that is the end of the quick wealth that Nyamgodho had acquired.

The Other Woman

Jedidah is a married woman who works as a secretary in one of the major banks in the city. She is married to a man named Jerry. The home of Jedidah and Jerry is in chaos because the second ayah had gotten pregnant. Jedidah is very worried for her house girls seem to get pregnant after working in her house for a while. The cook is blamed for impregnating the ayah which he denies vehemently. The cook and the ayah are both sacked by Jedidah.

Anna who is Jedidah’s best friend advises her to look into the marital issues that she(Jedidah) and Jerry may be having. Jedidah overlooks this and she hires another ayah. Since she is working, she is very busy and has no time for her husband. The other house girl whose name is Taplalai is very hardworking and very respectable to the family.

One day, Jedidah realizes that the bed sheets in the guest room always get changed everyday and laundered though there is no guest in the house. She decides to investigate the matter at lunchtime for her husband always comes home for lunch. That day, she goes to the house unannounced and finds her husband sleeping with Taplalai.

The Middle Door

Mrs. Muga is a renowned Kenyan author of children’s storybooks. One day, she decided to travel to Kisumu to see her husband from. She travels by train to the village for she bought a first class ticket. Aboard the train, her travel mate is a woman who is also going to the same destination. The woman has a lot of luggage including a live chicken in the compartment. Mrs. Muga gets very annoyed by this and she reports the case to the ticket master. The master kicks the other woman from first class and Mrs. Muga gets the space that she desires.

That night as she is retiring to bed, two policemen come into her compartment and attempt to rape her. She scares them away with a gun that she had bought for her nephew. When the train arrives in Kisumu, she is arrested for possession of a firearm. She is taken to the police station whereby she reveals that the gun is actually a toy gun.
