Nyamgodho

Nyamgodho is the main character in the story, ‘The Fisherman’. Nyamgodho is a peasant who makes his living from fishing. Lately, he had not caught any fish. This made his wife belittle him and question his skills. Through his character, the themes of the role of men in African Society are revealed.

Achunga

Achunga is a character in the story, ‘The Fisherman’. She is Nyamgodho’s wife. Her character has been used to portray the role of married women in African Traditional Society for she performs most of the domestic work like cooking.

Wagai

She is an old woman who is a medicine woman in the story, ‘The Fisherman’. She brings wealth into Nyamgodho’s home as payment for helping her from the lake. Wagai also reveals to the reader the role of traditional African specialists like medicine men which include performing magical acts.

June

She is a character in the story, ‘The Honorable Minister’. June is very jealous of her sister’s success in life. As a result, she is always trying to outsmart her sister to the extent that she plans to sleep with a minister in order to obtain a loan that would help her buy a house.

Jared

He is June’s husband in the story, ‘The Honorable Minster’. Jared is portrayed as a rule follower because the story has been set immediately after Kenya gained its independence. Most learned people had gained big positions in government from corrupt means but Jared had accepted his position in life as a teacher. As a result, his wife was angry at him because she desires a better life that the one that he can provide.

Mike Mawanga

Mike is the minister for housing at the time that June is introduced to him. He expects sexual favors from married women so that he can help them obtain a loan from the banks.

Jedidah

She is a character in the story, 'The Other Woman’ Her husband constantly cheats on her and gets the house helps pregnant. Jedidah represents modern women who strive to find the meeting point between tradition and modernism.

Professor Miyare

He was a professor of medicine at the University of Kenya who championed for heart transplant in sub-Saharan Africa. The professor was at crossroads for the African religion was against heart transplant whereas he wanted to make a historic finding and save human lives.

Rosemary

Rosemary is the wife of Professor Miyare. Despite being the professor's wife, she is often against his work in heart transplants for she believes that it is competing with God.
