How is Inez in “Mississippi Ham Rider” different from the other narrators so far?
Most of the narrators in Gorilla, My Love so far are children, girls with spunk and spice. They are not well-educated. They speak in slang. Many of them appear to be growing up in a low-income environment. For instance, in “Happy Birthday,” Ollie is an orphan who has no one to look out for her other than her grandfather, who is a drunkard. Hazel/Squeaky in “Raymond’s Run” is confident and uses slang. The only other adult narrator thus far is in “My Man Bovanne.” Unlike all of these narrators, Inez is educated, well-spoken (in the traditional sense), and has a career.
