The consequences of war

Goddess of Yesterday is set against the backdrop of the Trojan War, which was one of the bloodiest and most destructive wars in human history. The depiction of the destruction of the great city of Troy, the loss of life that comes from that destruction, and the broad upheaval reflect the devastating impact war has on societies, families, and individuals. In a split second, the war can end a life or radically alter the lives of anyone near it. Through Anaxandra's eyes, readers witness the personal toll war takes and the broader societal implications of the war. Alexandra loses friends; she also loses her way of life. Finally, this theme serves as a reminder of the long-lasting and far-reaching consequences of conflict.

The nature of love

Throughout the novel, countless relationships and alliances are tested, helping to reveal one of the novel's most important themes: the nature of love. For example, Anaxandra's loyalty to her new family in Troy helps to reveal the true nature of love. Despite a war with conflicting beliefs, Anaxandra must walk a tightrope to stay true to herself and her family, whom she loves. Additionally, Anaxandra's burgeoning affection for the Greek warrior Menelaus helps to reveal what it means to love someone in a dangerous profession and how complicated love is. The novel asks questions about what it means to be loyal, how love can be both a source of strength and vulnerability and how one navigates the complexities of relationships in times of conflict.

Deception

Almost immediately after Anaxandra becomes a princess, she utilizes deception as a central part of her survival toolkit. Without deceiving people, she will not thrive and probably won't survive either. The novel continually presents scenarios where characters either hide the truth or confront it in order to survive. These deceptions, while often born out of necessity, bring into focus the moral dilemmas faced by individuals during times of crisis and beg the question: When is it right to deceive, and when is it right for someone to stand by the truth, no matter the consequences?
