God of the Oppressed Metaphors and Similes

God of the Oppressed Metaphors and Similes

Panther simile

Cone quotes religious texts throughout this book, which includes a number of similes. For example, Cone quotes:

"Yahweh will be like a panther with them... will prowl like a leopard by the wayside." This simile suggests violence, strength, and speed."

Bear simile

In another religious passage, Cone quotes:

"God will meet them like a she-bear robbed of her cubs and tear their ribs apart."

This simile emphasizes God's protectiveness of mankind, suggesting he is like a mother whose children have been taken from her.

Bible metaphor

A metaphor is used by Cone in order to express his beliefs about the bible. Essentially, Cone is saying that the contents of the Bible should not be seen as being the objective truth:

"I have never believed that the Bible is above criticism or that it serves as an absolute judge in faith and practise."

The impact of religion

Cone uses a metaphor to describe the impact of black religion. He suggests that religion can be seen as a liberator:

"I sought to deepen my conviction that the God of biblical faith and black religion is best known as the Liberator of the oppressed from bondage."
