Go Ask Alice Metaphors and Similes

Futile (Metaphor)

Alice tried to talk to her parents and explain them how she felt. If they could listen to her without interrupting, it would definitely help the girl. Unfortunately, she might as well “be talking to the wind”. They “didn’t hear” or just didn’t want to listen to. All her attempts proved to be absolutely futile.

High and thoughtless (Metaphor)

Alice’s life in San Francisco was full of temptations. After a relatively long period of time of being clean, she returned to drugs and everything was just great. The only one thing which irritated her was people. She wanted “to shove life down their throats”, she wanted to make them understand her and her life, to destroy their unrealistic ideas about it.

A reminder of the past (Metaphor)

Alice “was blasted out of the water” one day, because someone had put a joint in her purse. She was rather scared and felt destroyed and desperate. Alice wanted to stay away from drugs but someone definitely enjoyed watching her suffer. Fears, temptations and nasty teasing were driving her crazy.

Hopeful and excited (Simile)

When Alice’s father got a new job, he was extremely happy. He worked really hard to earn that position! Not to mention that they could move to a bigger city and buy a better house. Alice wrote that he was “as excited as a little boy”. She got used to see him behaving seriously all the time and couldn’t believe that he could be that joyful and carefree.

Fat and unattractive (Simile)

Alice would like to look flawless, just like those models and actresses she saw on TV. She wasn’t too plump but she wasn’t satisfied with her look nonetheless. According to her, she looked “like cow”. She thought that a nice body could make her happier.

Duplicate (Simile)

Alice felt that she couldn’t fit in with her peers. The kids are “like robots”. They liked the same music and films, they all dressed alike and she felt that they all were trying “to be shadows of each other, trying to buy the same records and everything” even if they didn’t like them. Everyone was trying to keep up with the trends.
