Quotes

"Crazy isn't being broken, or swallowing a dark secret. It's you, or me, amplified. If you ever told a lie, and enjoyed it. If you ever wished you could be a child, forever. They were not perfect, but they were my friends. And by the 70s, most of them were out, living lives. Some I've seen. Some never again. But there isn't a day my heart doesn't find them."

Susanna

Susanna says this at the end of the movie after being released from the hospital. This statement tells us that the truth regarding mental health is much different than most believe it to be. That people inside of these mental institutions have the same issues as nearly all of us, they just amplify what is going on inside of themselves instead of pressing it down. Thus by doing so they become a danger to themselves and others around them. But it doesn't change the fact that they are human beings in need of connection just like the rest of us.

"Take one fuckin' step and I'll jam this in my aorta!"

Lisa

Lisa is a sociapath who seeks to have control over every situation and every person. And one of her greatest powers is threatening to kill herself. The nurse in this situation is able to difuse the situation by calling her bluff. She does so by explaing to Lisa that her aorta is in her chest. It shows that Lisa doesn't have control over the nurse and in order to keep any bit of that control she sought she goes along with what the nurse says stating that she'll remember that for next time.

"On the contrary, Susanna. Ambivalence suggests strong feelings... in opposition. The prefix, as in "ambidextrous," means "both." The rest of it, in Latin, means "vigor." The word suggests that you are torn... between two opposing courses of action."

Dr. Wick

Dr. Wick explains the meaning of the word ambivalence to Susanna who says it means "to not care." This statement shows us that once we become clear about what we are actually saying that the truth can be revealed to show us the way out of what feels and appears to be an impossible situation. Dr. Wick allows Susanna to see this truth within herself and sets her on a path to not being in this duality any longer, but instead finding her true identity.
