    Writing Pattern Poems

    Kind of Activity:

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will study pattern poems and write some of their own.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.6

    Structure:

    Students have discussed how "The Altar" and "Easter Wings" are examples of pattern poetry, also known as concrete poetry. Direct them to the concrete/pattern poetry page on the Poetry Foundation website, and have them explore more examples of the genre. After 10-15 minutes of individual exploration/reading, put them in small groups or pairs and have them informally discuss what they found.
