Satyagraha

A Sanskrit word defined as the power of nonviolence. A term coined and developed by Gandhi himself, it is a theory of protest that has influenced many social movements since.

Satyagrahi

Someone who practises satyagraha.

Swaraj

Freedom, or self-rule.

Ahimsa

A word derived from Sanskrit, defined as 'compassion'. Ahimsa is a key principle in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

Zamindar

From the Persian, meaning 'land-owner'. In relation the Indian sub-continent, a Zamindar was an aristocrat.

Indian National Congress

Often shortened to Congress. A social democratic/progressive political party founded in 1885 which was a key player in the Indian independence movement.
