Gandhi: Selected Political Writing is the collection of Mahatma Gandhi’s work. Gandhi was a political leader of India, who led the freedom movement till independence was achieved by that country. His non-violent means of achieving his goals influenced leaders like Martin luther king Jr. and Nelson Mandela.
Gandhi wrote several books like Hind Swaraj and his autobiography The story of my experiments with truth. He also published a weekly newspaper Young India, where he shared his thoughts on various issues. He spent time in understanding the teachings of the various religions and was deeply influenced by the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, a sacred text of Hindus. He borrowed ideas from all these teachings and applied these to modern life. His philosophy of Satyagraha (insistence on truth) and Ahimsa (non-violence) united the Indians to fight against British rule and has inspired millions around the globe.
The book is divided into two main sections: Satyagraha and Swaraj. It consists of his own thoughts on these two important aspects. First section defines Satyagraha and its impact on India’s freedom movement. The second section outlines the meaning and importance of Swaraj and the guiding principles of a welfare state. The word Satyagraha (insistence on truth) means the practice of nonviolent civil disobedience. The term Swaraj (home-rule) explains the importance of self-governance in India.
