Free Love and Other Stories Background

Free Love and Other Stories is an eclectic short story collection by British author Ali Smith. Published as Smith's first book in 1995, it won the Saltire Society First Book of the Year Award.

Free Love and Other Stories contains 12 short stories, in total numbering 195 pages in the print edition. The stories each explore themes such as female sexuality and relationships. Some of the notable stories include titles such as "Free Love", where a teenage girl on a trip to Amsterdam explores a new sexual freedom, and "Jenny Robertson Your Friend Is Not Coming", where a teenage girl and her friend go to a restaurant and watch a movie, discussing their relationships.

Ali Smith personally chose the cover image, a picture of actress Louise Brooks from Diary of a Lost Girl. In addition to the Saltire Society award, Free Love also won a Scottish Arts Council award. One London reviewer described Free Love as "a sweetly memorable collection of works".
