Five Tuesdays in Winter Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The symbolism of fantasy

The widow's point mansion in the story "The Creature" symbolizes fantasy. When Carol gets into the mansion for the first time, she starts fantasizing. The mansion is opulent, and Carol sees herself owning a similar house in the future with her husband and children. Carol is just a kid, but the widow's point mansion gives her hope that she will have a similar property in the future.

The symbolism of possibility

In the short story "Five Tuesdays in Winter," possibility is symbolized by the mushroom soup. Michel asks Kate to bring him a mushroom soup from the restaurant. However, Mitchell knows that the restaurant rarely sells mushroom soup. Kate is optimistic that she will be lucky despite the soup being rare in the restaurant. In the evening, Kate brings Mitchell the mushroom soup, and their love and bond become stronger.

The symbolism of ingenuousness

The character Carol symbolizes innocence. Carol naively falls in love with a married man without knowing it is wrong. Carol describes the man as a Rochester, implying that he is irresistible to any woman. Caro's expression shows a young woman in love for the first time, and the feeling is so good.
