Discuss the significance of Rose singing the hymn, "“Jesus, be a fence all around me every day / Jesus, I want you to protect me as a I travel / on my way" at the opening of Scene Two.
Fences are one of the major symbols of the play (as the title shows), particularly because of how each character reacts to and thinks about them. For Rose, the only fence of protection she needs comes from Christ and her faith, which her singing of this song highlights. The actual physical fence she asks Troy to build is to keep her family in and closer to her.
