Ghost
The ghost symbolizes Cam’s insecurities and worries about his future. After Kai’s death, his ghost continuously disturbs Cam. Cam was in love with Kai, and they were looking forward to marrying each other. However, Kai's death has disrupted Cam’s life, making him hopeless. The ghost haunts Cam to the extent that he decides to return to Houston to reunite with his surrogate family.
Food
Food is a significant symbol in the novel because it symbolizes unity and coexistence. The main characters in the novel love cooking and sharing food. In particular, Cam communicates using food. For instance, whenever Cam wants to show affection to the people, he cooks for them. Consequently, food is central among the characters because they all love cooking and sharing the little they have.
TJ’s bakery
TJ's bakery symbolizes Cam's childhood memories. After several years, Cam returns to Houston and requests his surrogate mother to allow him to work in the bakery. The bakery reminds Cam about his relationship with TJ and other childhood friends. Cam and TJ discovered their sexualities while working in the bakery. Many things have changed, especially for Cam. However, the bakery is refreshing because it brings up old sweet memories.
