The game of chess symbolizes Marco's intellectual capability. Marco is a bright student who scores straight A's in all subjects, and he prefers to play chess because it helps him think critically. Marco's father wants him to be an athlete, but Marco has always remained persistent in doing what he loves most, studying and playing chess.

The symbolism of teamwork

The author uses the character, Isaac, to symbolize teamwork. Isaac is the best basketball player in school and attributes his success to the joint effort. Every player in the team wants to practice with Isaac because he encourages cooperation. Isaac believes that if he works closely with Marco, he can improve his school grades and help Isaac to become a good basketball player. Isaac strongly believes that with teamwork, nothing is impossible.

The trophies symbolize the successes of Isaac and Marco in their respective fields. Isaac has several MVP basketball trophies, and Marco has won more than five trophies in English spelling competitions. The possessions of these trophies signify that Isaac and Marco are dedicated teens who are determined to get the best in life.
