Everything Beautiful in Its Time Summary

Everything Beautiful in Its Time: Seasons of Love and Loss is a memoir written by the daughter of the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, Jenna Bush Hager.

Hager was seven years old when her grandfather, the First George H.W. Bush, was elected as President. This changed her life forever but her relationship with her grandparents never changed. Her life then changed again when she was in college and her father, the Second George H.W. Bush, was elected as President and the White House became her new home.

Despite her father’s role as one of the most important figures in the world at the time, Hager did not let that stop her from enjoying her early twenties. She was known for being a party girl and sicking her tongue out at reporters. However, she eventually grew up and went on to have a successful career in journalism and a happy marriage with three children.

The book also details Hager’s experience growing up with each set of her grandparents. She describes her maternal grandparents as being the complete opposite to her paternal grandparents. Her maternal grandparents, Harold and Jenna Welch, were liberal Democrats who lived a much humbler life and taught her the profound meaning of life and the moralities of the world.

She also describes her paternal grandparents as being busy but loving people who always made time for her. She recounts how Barbara “Ganny” Bush would write her diary entries in the morning whilst drinking her coffee. The little things Hager grew up to value about both her parents and grandparents are the ones she now passes on to her own children.
