Discuss the environment in which Diana lives. In what ways does it contribute to her failure as a student?
While Diana was not physically separated from her mother, the environment she lived in was financially strained. At the age of three, she was dropped off at school by her mother at 7 A.M., picked up at 5 P.M., and dropped off at a babysitter at 2 A.M. In North Carolina, they lived in a three-bedroom house with seven other migrants in order to be able to save money to send to Honduras. With her mother and all other adult figures busy working, Diana was most likely often left to her own devices. We can assume her mother was not attending parent/teacher conferences...
