Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will practice engaged and discerning reading skills, learning how to infer characters’ inner thoughts, emotions, and motivations from what is explicitly stated in the text.

    Students will explore the unique ways that a play can come to life on stage, such as through specific directorial and acting choices.

    Students will think and write about difficult issues in the play like racism, violence, and sexuality.

    Students will practice writing analytically by using concrete evidence from the text to back up and develop original arguments.
