Why do you think Baraka titled the play “Dutchman”?
The play’s title refers to the fact that one of the first slave-bearing ships was Dutch. It also refers to the fable of the “Flying Dutchman,” the tale of a ghost ship that is fated to sail the ocean for all of eternity. Like the Flying Dutchman, racism is seemingly never-ending, but rather keeps repeating itself with different individuals. Also, as in the myth, Clay never reaches his final destination.
