Voices of nature
In the story "Blacksoil Country" the imagery of nature, nature's sounds and scents are vividly described. Our main protagonist, a young boy whose father's unbending personality forces the family to move often, enjoys this new place they've come to covered in black soil. Most of all he enjoys the sounds, the voices of nature, of magpies, owls, crows and frogs which he divides into night and day voices.
Road trip over Australia
Harry and May are a young couple from the story "Lone Pine" who decide to use their free time off work for a road trip trough the northern parts of Australia. Harry is excited with the imagery provided here as opposed to the south where they come from. Bird species that are rare there are everywhere in these parts, a lot of empty, lone roads and highways provide a variety of life, like hitchhikers, fruit-pickers, seasonal workers or entire families packed in single vehicles. This imagery of lone roads, miles of uninhabited land and the drive through the night provide an ominous foreshadowing for the things to come.
