Divergent (2014 Film) Themes

Fear

Tris chooses to become a Dauntless, which essentially means fearless, constantly going against her biggest fears and overcoming them. Therefore, it is naturally one of the main themes in the movie. During the simulations, she has to overcome her direct fears, making sure that they become fewer and fewer during the course of her time as a Dauntless. She learns that having fears isn’t wrong but letting them have power over you is.

Family

Tris’ family is what she holds on to when she doesn’t know what to do anymore. They are what taught her what right and wrong is, and she follows their rules even after she leaves the place. She tries saving them, as her faction goes to try killing all of their faction, though she is caught while in action.

Being different

In the book, being a “Divergent” means being different - not fitting into one group, while simultaneously fitting into all the groups. She doesn’t fit into the society that they have built, which is why the Erudite want her dead. She understands that being different doesn’t have to be a bad things, especially as it helps her try saving her parents as her faction goes on a killing spree.
