Denying History Metaphors and Similes

Denying History Metaphors and Similes

Simile: The German Death Machine

Adolf Eichmann: "'And I witnessed the gruesome workings of the machinery of death; gear meshed with gear, like clockwork.'"

In this quote, Eichmann compares the inner-workings of the German death machine with a clock that works exceptionally well.

Simile: Drink Schnapps like Water

In a quote Shermer includes in the book by Adolf Eichmann, Eichmann remarks that he drank schnapps like water. In other words, he drank a tremendous amount of Schnapps very quickly.

Metaphor: Giving "the Devil" its "due"

In the first few pages of the book, Shermer mentions giving "the Devil," its "due." In this case, the devil is free speech, which allows Holocaust deniers to spout their horrible, Devil-like ideology.

Metaphor: The 'Showers'

The 'Showers' are a metaphor for the gas chambers that killed so many people.

Simile: Zundel's "Yo-yo"

Says Zundel: "I was like one yo-yo, back and forth..."

In saying this, Zunel compares his belief in the Holocaust to a yo-yo: at some points, he believed in it; at others, he did not believe in the Holocaust.
