Mysteries (Metaphor)
Sinclair recalls his childhood and his feelings: the whole world used to look like a day and a night: his parents and sisters live in the world of light, but still the world of a night, the dark world fascinated him more. Even being a child he knew that the world is full of secrets. There are rooms “pregnant with secrets” behind every solid door. His words mean that people always hide their secrets behind the walls of their houses, in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens etc. This metaphor also means that it is only a matter of time when other people find out your secret.
Awful reputation (Metaphor)
Before Emil Sinclair even meets Franz Kromer, his bully and tormentor, he knows that Franz’s family has “a bad name”. An always drunken father and other family members could hardly be considered respectful members of the society. Besides, Franz behaves like “young factory workers”, which also makes him look dangerous in the eyes of others.
Purity of mind (Metaphor)
Emil always knew that his parents are examples of ideal Christians. They find support and strength in the Bible and rely on their faith unquestionably. According to him, they “dwell in light and righteousness”, for they don’t even know what a temptation is. Although their world is subdued to rules and the Bible, it is the world of illusions.
Unexpectedly (Simile)
Being absolutely wrapped in his thoughts, Emil didn’t pay any attention to a lecture. Then “teacher's voice shot like lightning” into his consciousness. It was a moment, when Dr. Pollens mentioned a name of Abraxas. Lightning always hits unexpectedly and Dr. Pollen’s mentioning of Abraxas is also unexpected.
Power (Simile)
It is said that Alfons Beck is “strong as a bear”. This simile implies his impressive physical capabilities. It might be that because of it, he becomes one of the most popular students in a boarding school. It also explains why he doesn’t look like a schoolboy.
Isolated (Simile)
Max’ appearance, numerous rumors about him and his mother, his unknown religious affiliation and that rather strange knowing look in his eyes don’t help him to find a common language with other schoolboys. He wanders “among them like a separate planet”, absolutely lonely and surrounded by an aura all his own.
