“Belief as such always has doubt at the bottom. It's knowing that makes wizardry work. Only knowing can banish doubt.”
Nita was registering her concerns to Sreee about not knowing how to shape-shift into a humpback whale wizard. Sreee told her that there was no believing without the slightest feeling of doubt. She assured her that she could do it since she had the right knowledge to execute it. She insisted that believing was not enough, one had to back it up with a little knowledge to counter doubts. The knowledge she had about wizardry was enough to get her to do it well. Even in real life, belief is never enough, but once you have enough knowledge to back up the belief then the execution becomes possible. Her advice to Nita was to never fully rely on belief but rather put her confidence in the knowledge she has about it.
“What's loved, lives.”
Nita was having second thoughts about her role as the silent lord in the song. Carl gave her three options, with one of them being having to do it willingly. He advised her that if she did it from her heart to honor the course of saving all those lives, then it did not matter if she died because she would be remembered forever. Just like with a treasured gift, if you lose it, you will always remember it because it had occupied a special place in your memories. The same applies to losing a loved one, in our hearts they live forever because we loved them. He was trying to make Nita see the importance of her sacrifice and how many lives would be saved because of her. He assured her that her sacrifice would not go to waste but would forever be remembered.
“Belief made no difference to the truth.”
Nita had known that she would die one day, but having to face it sooner was too much for her to take in. Ed, the master shark, was trying to widen Nita’s horizons. It did not matter whatever belief she had about her death or when it would happen because the truth was, it was happening sooner than she expected. Coming to terms with the reality of having to give her life up was not easy and therefore she hung onto the hope that things might change and she would not have to do it.
“—for spells work best, you wizards tell me, when all the participants are of light heart and enjoying themselves. I’ll certainly enjoy eating you when the time comes ‘round.”ed
Nita was feeling low after realizing that Ed was going to kill her in the song. On the contrary, Ed was justifying his actions as not being personal, but a responsibility bestowed upon him that he must perform. Just like any job, he knew he must show eagerness while doing it, however bad the other party feels.
