What is the irony of Roberto’s predicament?
The irony for Roberto is that the only way he may live is to confess, but he would have no idea what to confess if he is innocent; thus, there is no room for his possible innocence in Paulina’s plan for him. This is the reason he needs Gerardo to learn the details of Paulina’s captivity and feed them back to him in order to allow him to give an accurate confession.
