De Republica Anglorum was written by Sir Thomas Smith in 1562 during the time of his occupation as the ambassador to Queen Elizabeth in France. His job as ambassador was to describe and evaluate the “English social institutions, judicial system and governmental procedures”. This was meant to be an aid to foreigners who were not familiar with the English ways and institutional proceedings.
De Republica Anglorum was a success as it provided much aid to foreigners and gave insight into “Elizabethan England”. Sir Thomas was a highly acclaimed and very educated scholar who had considerable experience in government. This helped elevate the handbook’s status and worth, making it very popular and gained prestige.
The original work was in long hand and not easily comprehensible. However, publications have been introduced with clearly typed, organized, clearly formatted editions, making it convenient for the modern readers.
