Daughters in Exile follows a 21-year-old aspiring writer named Lola. Lola is a happy college graduate living a seemingly fulfilling life in Senegal. She has got a fulfilling job, has a nice apartment, a vibrant social life, and has seemingly endless opportunities to succeed and thrive in her country. Her world radically changes when she falls in love with a man named Armand, who is an American Marine stationed at the United States Embassy in Senegal. When Lola tells her mother, a famous high court judge in Ghana, about her new love, she disapproves of it. But Lola follows her heart and boards a plane with Armand to live with him in America.
On her journey to America, Lola thought her life would be wonderful in America. She would be with the man she loved, and she would go to a land of tremendous opportunity. But her decision to go to America would be a fateful decision for her; after she went to America, she would go on an extraordinary journey which would no doubt change her life forever. As an illegal alien in the United States, Lola faced quite a few challenges. These challenges faced numerous challenges that test herself. She faces things like racism and a lack of opportunity. To build a new life in America and reunite with her family, she must conjure up quite a bit of courage to navigate her new life as an undocumented immigrant in America.
Even though she faces adversity which would have crushed less motivated and less strong people, Lola never loses hope. She knows she will have a good life with a man she loves. She constantly pursues a better life, drawing upon her mother and her own strength. And ultimately, she succeeds. She builds a life which anyone would envy; she creates a brighter future for herself and for her family.
