Daughter in Exile Metaphors and Similes

Daughter in Exile Metaphors and Similes

Civilization

D.C [Washington] is compared to civilization. During the party, one of the Americans declares, “Get me out of here, that’s what I say! Back to D.C. Back to civilization.” The declaration implies that D.C. is a place that is more civilized than Senegal. The Americans feel that Senegal is backward; thus, life there is uncomfortable and backward. Even though they are in Senegal, they look down upon the country that hosts them. Snobbishness hinders them from appreciating Senegal for its uniqueness and culture.

Wolf

Lola notices Barry's teeth which are comparable to those of a wolf. She narrates, "He grinned, revealing his wolfish teeth." Based on Lola's description, the teeth are sharp and pointy, just like those of wolves. Due to the teeth’s uniqueness, one easily notices when he grins. Lola pays attention to every aspect of the party, including people's appearances. Her attentiveness makes her an ideal writer who could explore even minute details in her writing.

Fool

Mindy feels that Len's indiscretion makes him a fool. After witnessing how Len humiliates Lola by calling her "Fatou,” Mindy declares, “ What a fool." Mindy is not impressed by Len's patronizing behavior. She feels offended by the way he hurts Lola's dignity. Referring to Len as a fool surmises that Mindy is sensitive to Lola’s feelings and would not like her to be hurt just because she looks different.
