Conversations with Friends Background

In her debut novel entitled Conversations with Friends (2017), Irish author Sally Rooney tells the story of two female college students who start a rather strange and unorthodox relationship they start with a seemingly happily married couple. Both women are drawn to art - specifically spoken word poetry - and meet the aforementioned married couple at a spoken word poetry event. The two students and the married couple begin to connect and start to spend time with each other, but things are not what they seem. And what initially seems like a fun and amusing relationship quickly turns into something completely different.

When it was released, Conversations with Friends was met with profound critical acclaim. Entertainment Weekly, for example, loved the book, writing that it is “[A] cult-hit" and "[a] sharply realistic comedy of adultery and friendship.” Kirkus Reviews thought similarly, writing that the book is "A clever and current book about a complicated woman and her romantic relationships."
