Much of Hemingway's short fiction prompts comparison to his longer fictional works. This is especially true of the short stories about wars, which bear resemblance to Hemingway's war novels A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls. It might also be interesting for students to look at The Nick Adams Stories, a collection published posthumously of the twenty-four stories Hemingway wrote featuring Nick Adams, four of which are included in this lesson plan.
Hemingway's work is also very connected to that his American contemporaries in the "Lost Generation," including F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein.
