Closely Watched Trains Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Milos' Uniform

Milos' uniform is a symbol for quality, that he has a purpose in life. There is his life before the uniform and after the uniform. After the uniform he has respect and becomes respected in his community because his position is considered prestigious and he is fulfilling his lineage of working on the train by following his father, who is one of the most well known engine drivers to work at the station.

Father's Watch

Milos' father holds a watch with him to make sure the trains are still coming in on time in his retirement. It's a symbol that he still longs for his work as a engine driver. He even settles into a spot that is right by the window in order to wait for the trains to pass by.

Clock Chimes

We hear the clock chime at the station, and everyone listens to it. The clock chimes symbolize the beauty of time for everyone at the station as they depend on the clock to ensure every train is on time and thus everything is delivered where it is meant to be.

Rabbit Killed

Menzel shows a rabbit coupling with another rabbit in their cage, and then the next cut is the rabbit getting killed for food. The symbolism in this is that of the cruelty in times of war. Just as the bunny has finished the physical act of pleasure his life ends. Thus Menzel is stating a cruel fact about the nature of war for all people through the bunnies.

A Trap

While going over enemy positions and talking about the traps that are being set Menzel shows a woman rubbing a pencil down her shirt. It symbolizes how men sensualize women's acts and thus become trapped by them and not able to focus on the task at hand.
