    Poetic Annotation

    Kind of Activity:

    Collaborative Writing

    Objective:

    By annotating the poem, students will more thoroughly understand form, content, and significance.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.3, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.2

    Structure:

    Students should have copies of each of Marlowe's translations of Ovid's Elegies. Ask them to locate the third elegy, the shortest, for annotation.

    Direct students to mark the following aspects of the poem: rhyme patter, meter, unfamiliar vocabulary, sound, repetition. Students should be able to distinguish and categorize their annotations; for example, all the...
