Check, Please!: Sticks and Scones picks up where the last novel in the series left off and chronicles Eric "Bitty" Bittle's senior year at Samwell University. The novel chronicles Eric's life as a student, a baker, a vlogger, and a hockey player.
As with the previous entry in the series, the novel explores Eric's changing relationship with his former teammate, Jack Zimmerman, who is now a professional hockey player. Although the two are far apart and both have intense scheduling commitments, they find a way to make their long-distance relationship work.
Once again, the camaraderie and friendships within Eric's hockey team are a focus of the novel. Eric receives tremendous encouragement and support from his teammates. But Eric starts to think about his future after graduation, which worries him. His romance with Jack, as well as his hobbies, helps him move past the difficulties in his life.
Much of the rest of the book is focused on the hockey season, which forges ahead. Jack's team navigates intense, meaningful games as they once again strive to vie for another championship. But they don't have Jack, putting a greater strain on Jack's hockey and leadership skills. Still, he perseveres, graduates college, and his life becomes more complicated and fulfilling.
