Catching Teller Crow Summary

Catching Teller Crow Summary

Catching Teller Crow begins with the death of Beth Teller, a teenager who finds herself stuck between life and death. She remains tethered to the living world due to her bond with her grieving father, Michael Teller, who is a police detective. Michael is the only one who can see and communicate with his daughter's spirit. Together, the two work to determine who killed Beth and how her spirit can finally be freed.

Beth and Michael begin their journey by investigating a mysterious fire at a local children's home, which caused the death of an unidentified man. Their inquiries lead them to Isobel Catching, a potential witness to the fire. When the duo speaks to her, Isobel conveys her experiences through abstract, poetic tales. She regales Michael and Beth with stories of the Crow and the Deadlands, which are spiritual realms that link life and the afterlife.

As Beth and Michael delve deeper, they uncover a series of disappearances involving local Indigenous girls. These cases had been largely disregarded or covered up by local authorities, who don't care about the girls because of their race. As the two discover more about the girls, it becomes clear to them that each of the children's homes (an orphanage of sorts in which all of them lived) had sinister things going on behind the scenes. Namely, each of the girls was abused in one way or another.

The unidentified man who died in the fire was privy to these crimes and had evidence that could implicate those responsible for them. Because of this, the man was killed by those people to cover up their crimes.

Eventually, Isobel is revealed as one of the victims of the home's abuse. Her seemingly abstract tales are, in fact, a veiled recounting of the traumas she endured and witnessed. With her help, Michael and his daughter's spirit reveal the wrongs committed by the town's authority figures. Additionally, Isobel's narratives are recognized not only as personal catharsis but also as a testament to the suppressed truths of the town's dark history.
