Identity

Throughout this text, we learn about different aspects of Renee's personality, whether it's about her inner thoughts, her career, or her abilities as a writer. Each essay is about a different aspect of her personality, and through her exploration of various ideas, we learn more about who she is. This collection is all about paying attention to the thoughts we have each day, in order to gain a better understanding of who we are, and what our purpose is.

Love

Many of the essays in this collection are about love. This included essays about Renee's personal love life, but also about other people's love lives and observations Renee has made. For example, in one essay Renee shares some differences between herself and her partner Danielle in regards to gatherings with friends. In another, Renee considers how everyone has their own romantic past and represents romantic relationships as a "map," including many different connections.

Career

Renee often talks about her career in this collection, and it is implied that she works as a university lecturer. She often refers to the "university level," and her lofty description of this represents her experiences working at a university. In one essay, Renee recounts a memory of being fired, where the president of the university used the phrase "slam dunk," to reinforce her point.
