Calamities Irony

Irony of voting

Gladman writes that she began the day "having to vote Yes or No to support the decision that there would be no decision right now but that there might possibly be one in two years' time, excepting the case that there isn't." This is ironic, as votes are supposed to be meaningful and effective, but in this case, her vote certainly isn't.

Irony of the book

In one section, Gladman describes how she wanted her essays to "do more," and was reading a book alongside it to help her. However, although she thought the book would help her, it "turned out [she] wanted more from this book as well."

Irony of writing

Gladman begins one section by saying that she had started thinking that "writing was becoming a thing of the past as my fondness for Rollerblading now was." This is ironic, as she went on to finish writing the text we are reading.
