The irony of Hallenback
Eric advises Hallenback on dealing with students who bully him in school. Ironically, Hallenback goes to his bullies and tells them that Eric is talking ill of them. They scheme to attack Eric and beat him up. The reader finds it paradoxical when Hallenback joins his enemies to attack an individual trying to help him deal with his bullies.
Verbal irony
When Mrs. Rosen tells Griffin that her dog died, Griffin shows remorse, and he tells her that he feels her pain. Ironically, Griffin does not mean what he says because he is happy that the dog died. After Mrs. Rosen leaves, Griffin tells Eric that she is a wealthy "old git" and that her pet dog is a brainless animal that never knew how to control its barking. Eric is shocked at Griffin's utterances a minute after he comforted Mrs. Rosen with kind words.
The irony of helping an elderly customer
When Griffin tells Eric they should help an older woman carry her luggage to the car, he agrees because that is an act of humanity. Griffin reminds Eric that they should always help people who are in need. Ironically, after helping the older woman, Griffin steals a packet of gum, claiming it is part of the payment for their work. Eric gets shocked because Griffin does the contrary when he decides to steal to pay himself.
