Jacqueline Woodson was born in Ohio, lived for a few years in South Carolina as a child after her mother MaryAnn separated from her father Jack, and then, at age 7, moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she would spend all the following years of her life. She has been writing since before she could technically write, and enjoyed telling what she calls "outright lies" as a child for the pleasure of making up stories. She was convinced that she would be a writer from the time she was very young, and eventually, her talent and dedication convinced her family and teachers as well.
