Tom Jeffords
Tom Jeffords is the main character and narrator of the movie. He is an American but is interested in the ways and traditions of the Apache people. He doesn’t hold a prejudice against them, as many of the Cochise does. He decides to learn their language and is welcomed into their society as a result, marrying an Apache woman he falls in love with, who is called Sonseeahray.
Sonseeahray
Sonseeahray is an Apache woman who Tom Jeffords falls in love with as he enters the Apache society. She is young ang beautiful, and a true Apache woman with pride. She is killed towards the ending of the book, which is a part of how Tom Jeffords concludes that the peace between the people is sealed, as he says, “the death of Sonseeahray has put a seal upon the peace”.
General Otis Howard
General Otis Howard is a Christian general. He wanted there to be peace between everyone, which is why he hires Jeffords to negotiate. He also condemns racism, saying that everyone is human no matter they skin color, as the bible never mentions the pigmentation of skin. The General and Tom Jeffords has respect for each other, as they both are respectable men.
