In Bridget Jones's Diary, Fielding makes satirical reference to numerous (and mostly unhealthy) diet and health trends that were popular in the 1990s with which students may have varying levels of familiarity. In addition, the romantic relationships shown in the novel include problematic sexual power dynamics, as well as instances of sexual harassment that are treated as typical male behavior in the novel. All of these references are representative of standard viewpoints at the time, and while Fielding is providing a social critique of many of these trends, it is also notable that the protagonist herself and her friends are often willfully participating in the problematic behaviors...
