Objective:
Students will read the afterword of "Breath, Eyes, Memory" and analyze why the author felt the need to write it.

Structure:
Breath, Eyes, Memory did not originally have any sort of afterword. In the 20th anniversary edition, however, there is an afterword letter from Edwidge Danticat to Sophie, as well as an afterword in the form of an essay. Have the students read both of these, either individually or within small groups.
