Born in Flames Themes

Rights for the Underrepresented

This film's central theme is the rights of the underrepresented--women, gay rights organizations--and their voice gaining acknowledgement. The Women's Army is formed because its members want action taken for them, so that they are treated as equals in status and pay.

Government Cover

A major theme of this film is that while the Government claims to be a socialist democracy but that it operates in name only. We watch as the women in the film reveal that they are being oppressed and not treated as equals to the men they have worked and lived side by side with for the last 10 years that were meant to be years of liberation, but have only continued to stifle the women while men continue to be privileged.

Being Heard

The two parallel radio stations are seen throughout the film. They represent the voice of the women's movement attempting to make change, but each from a different view--one is more radical while the other is less willing to use violence. But, in the end violence is used because violence has been perpetrated against them and it causes the two stations to join in and become one voice.
