Boogie Nights Imagery

Floating Camera

Anderson introduces a multitude of characters in a pool party scene with a floating camera that lasts for a long take. The imagery takes us through a multitude of relationships, conflicts, issues, desires within the pornographic industry. All of which culminates with Eddie and Reed doing dives off the diving board into the pool, like children. We see children in the bodies of grown men surrounded by people with great issues.

Horror

Anderson films Little Bill speaking to Kurt in a medium close two shot. In between them, we see a group of men standing around watching Bill's wife having sex with another man. The imagery shows the horror of Bill's inner life coming to reality before his eyes, and while everyone else has minimized this act he can't carry on as normal life.

Handshake

We see the Colonel shake hands with Eddie at a pool party as he is introduced to him by Jack. Anderson shows the hands clasping in a close-up. The imagery creates the very real idea that Eddie is making a pact with something/someone corrupt and evil.

Looming Disaster

Anderson uses a long take with a handheld camera to follow Little Bill as he enters the New Year's Eve party to find his wife having sex with another man. He then walks to his car, gets a gun, and goes back and kills her and her lover, then himself. The long take creates a massive tension as we as the audience know what is about to happen and we feel the horror he is experiencing within himself, and the horror he perpetrates.
