Setting and Context

The action of the graphic novel takes place in Seattle in the 70s.

Narrator and Point of View

The stories are related from the perspectives of four different narrators, all related from a first-person, subjective point of view.

Tone and Mood

The tone and mood used in the graphic novels is a violent, sexual and vulgar one.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonist is Keith, Eliza and Chris and the antagonist is Dave.

Major Conflict

The major conflict is between the people infected with the bug and the rest of the world who remains unaffected.

Climax

The novel reaches its climax when Chris decides to move into the woods.

Foreshadowing

In the first installment of the novel, when the narrator dissects the frog, the image described foreshadows the gruesomeness of the disease and how it will eventually affect the bodies of those affected.

Understatement

In the second installment, when Chris tells Rob she knows is an understatement because she later proves that she did not knew about him being affected by the bug.

Allusions

One of the things alluded in the novel is the idea that those who were healthy felt a strange pull towards those who were infected by the bug. This also transmits the idea that in some cases, the ones who got infected could not control themselves and were just a victim as well.

Imagery

Before the beginning of every installment, two photos are presented, one portraying a normal looking teenager and the second one portraying the same person affected by the bug. This side by side comparison is important because it transmits that those who were infected were once normal and that they may still be the same person under their changed appearance.

Paradox

A paradoxical idea appears at the beginning of the second installment when the narrator claims he does not feel repulsed by the image of his friends being infected by the bug. Despite this, he still thinks that those who are infected would be much happier living secluded from the rest of the world, surrounded by other infected people.

Parallelism

No parallelism can be found.

Personification

We find a personification in the 12th installment in the sentence "the rattling hum of an air conditioner, a big, soft bed’’.

Use of Dramatic Devices

Because this is a graphic novel, there are no dramatic devices used.
